______With most of the things I do nowadays, it's almost like I prefer to be alone opposed to with others.  It's funny how I'm not afraid to do things by myself anymore.   The thought of picking up my mom's prescription while she waited in the car used to scare the living daylights out of me, but now I will gladly drive myself to a deli for the sole purpose of having lunch with no one but myself and a book for as long as I desire.  I can go to Starbucks and order myself a hot tea and study there with the understanding that sometimes it's okay to buy yourself tea, and not everything you do has to be a social outing.  It's nice, I suppose, not having to depend on anyone but yourself.  Maybe that's why I don't mind doing things alone.  When I'm not with another person, I can do what I want for as long as I would like without the fear of intruding upon someone else's time or feeling like they are being oppressive to my own time.  It's not lonely--it's freeing.

______But yeah, I guess that doing more things on my own is one of the ways I've been able to push myself out of my comfort zone in the past year or so.  Even though I always think that I haven't changed much since entering college, I guess now that I look back at it, I have grown.  Maybe not a lot, but a little.  We grow up bit by tiny bit, I suppose.

______Of course, that's not to say there's still tons of growing up for me to do, because there definitely is.  I still get overemotional about things which some may consider minor worries.  I still lack the proper amounts of confidence to do certain things.  I still have a mini-heart attack when talking on the phone.  Heck, I still sleep with a giant plush whale and lobster (and they are aptly named Mr. Whale and Lobby, thank you very much).  I'm still probably in the wee caterpillar stages of my life, but perhaps one day I'll be spinning my own cocoon and emerging as an ever-most darling little butterfly.

______In all honesty, I've always been kind of an introvert, though.  I'm one of those people who will gladly be with people, but would rather listen to others speak opposed to participating; that doesn't mean I'm bored or would rather be doing something else, it just means that I'm more than content with simply being there.

______I guess what I'm getting at is that it just took me a while to figure out how to be an introvert by myself.  That doesn't make sense.  That is the farthest thing from sense.  Make sense?  Good.

  1. I love a cute polka dot dress like this! It will always remind me of Gwen Stefani and the "Don't Speak" video - which is an awesome teen memory for me! You look great and I love the quality in your photos!

  6. Hi Ali, I totally know what you mean about doing things alone, I am slowly learning to do that as well. I think everyone knows by now about my polka dot phobia, but you always look so elegant and I have to show this outfit to my friend, she's going to go gaga over it!

  7. First of all, I'm a new reader and I absolutely love your style! I just started college too and it's been a ton of fun and I know exactly what you're feeling.
Second of all, I just wanted to say I'm super happy that you're comfortable with your introvertedness. I've done a lot of research about the subject and I'm super passionate about it and I'm really happy that you're comfortable with your personality. Us introverts are pretty stinking awesome, if I do say so myself.
Okay, sorry for the long comment, hah. I hope you have a great day!

  9. I can so relate to this, i'm an introvert too. Although I sometimes feel like I should be talking more instead of just listening or finding it strange that I enjoy shopping by myself, I realize I should just accept it since it's okay to want to shop alone sometimes. I had to have an interview over the phone and it was the worst D: lol I get a mini heart attack when I talk on the phone too.

But anyways, I love this polka dot dress of your's it is so cute with the lace up booties and the bauble necklace.

  13. I ςªŋ totally relate to what you're saying. I used to be like that, but I surprise myself these days with my outspokenness and assertiveness. And my ability to express myself in the midst of others. You're right about being a caterpillar emerging from its cocoon. Love your polka dots dress. Great look.

  15. Oh Ali, I know just how you feel, and I feel like I need to grow, just a little bit more. Independence is a weird thing, a love-hate relationship if you will.

But I do think I'd enjoy spending time with you in person, I hope we get to meet some day.

  16. I love your honesty in this post. I have always been an extrovert but could never do things on my own until I moved out and now I also prefer to be alone and do my own thing. It's a good feeling. (Also I still sleep with a teddy bear).

Anyway, I love your dress and all the wonderful details you used to style it. Especially that anchor belt.

    Have a wonderful week!

ps: your comment last week made me smile :)

  20. I can totally relate to this. I love being with people but prefer listening. I've gotten out of my shell a lot more this past year though, so that's good. And I do hate leaving phone messages! Haha You look lovely, that dress is so cute and I love how you accesorized it!

  23. You know what? That DID make sense. To me at least, because I'm the exact same. I prefer being an introvert, honestly. I enjoy being in the company of other's at times and just listening to the conversation and fun comments play out, but I'm never really a PART of it. Make sense?
I like being by myself for the most part because then I don't have to worry about entertaining others or being considerate of what they might want to do. Haha, so actually, I guess I'm saying I'm selfish xD
Ah well. Its good to be independent. We all have some growing to do still - but its good to reflect and realize the progress you've made :)
Anyway, there I go rambling again...
On a simpler note, you look spot-tastic (hehe, pun time!). And I really like these boots you're wearing. Perfect for cool days!

  26. You look great! The polka dots are so cute

I think being content with just being with yourself is one of the most important things actually, and I think once I figured that out I became more relaxed and easygoing. I don't need to be surrounded by people all the time, and that is totally fine - it doesn't make me a loner or boring! Anyways, I'm just trying to say I definitely understand where you are coming from : )

  28. Every single time you wear polka dots I think I die a little bit of happiness. You always rock them flawlessly (that, or your main picture on the side of your blog incepted my mind and convinced me you were meant for polka dots).

And ever since college I really started to feel okay doing things alone as well! It's not embarrassing at all to have lunch alone or adventure with your tripod by yourself (I'm still trying to justify my awkward self-portraits). Huzzah to expanding your comfort zone! We just keep on growing and getting stronger. Keep being the beautiful person you are. :)
