Hexagons in Burnt Hase

Wind and Hexagons
Hexagons in Burnt Hase
[printing] ink and colored pencil, September 2013

______One of the three art classes I'm taking this semester is Monoprinting, and it's just that: a printing class where you end up with, well, one print opposed to being able to create many with something like a linoleum block cutout. I got an override for the basic printmaking course and jumped Mario-style up to the Monoprinting class. I've realized two very important things about this class: one, that even two one-fourth of the way into the semester, I still have yet to make a decent print, and two, that you can't really screw anything up even if you do screw it up. Because even if the printing press is too tight, thus smooshing the ink into each other like lovers cramped in a tiny janitor's closet, you can always wait for the print to dry and work back into it.

______That being said, this print was initially pretty darn blobtastic and definitely needed a little rehab. A few hearty strokes of white colored pencil and black conte did just the trick! Even that awful scratching where I tried to scrumble two unscumbleable inks together looks almost intentional after I touched it up. How 'bout that?

______On a side note, I'm totally attempting to title my artsies with more exotic and sensational names. Misspellings and alliterations? Synonyms that you didn't know existed until you checked the thesaurus? Yeah, son. We're gettin' serious now.

______Have a good one, folks.

I love hexagons. they are my favorite shape these days. sadly, after the age of 5, people rarely ask you what your favorite shape is.

I also think your efforts to come up with provocative names for your artwork is fresh and fun. so much more interesting than "untitled #12490"

Hi Ali...I so see your bright and bold future ahead in the art world, I think with your creativity and brilliant ideas, you could move into fashion as well, designing new interesting prints for clothes! Is that something you would consider? This is such a terrific and unique print, I like the colour scheme and shape involved. Thanks for your kind words. Have a great weekend!

Ah, Ali! I haven't heard much from you lately so I'm so glad to see that you're still updating! By the way, this is totally off topic, but I had this dream that I ran into you at a pancake house the other week. I was super excited to meet you in person, to say the least haha. And I also saw your edgy skirt with the "pows" on it in Seventeen this month--you stylish trendsetter!

Your dress in the previous post was absolutely exquisite. I was recently contacted by Fiigirl to order something too haha! I absolutely adore your pretty looks. I wish I could describe it...they're delicately pretty but they're always infused with a spark of your energy. I feel exactly the same way about life now--the work is enough to make me feel like I'm drowning, but I'm not quite submerged. We'll troop through this together!

I love your exquisite art. Yay that your art teacher approved the fairy project! Burnt orange is the perfect phrase for this piece. For some reason, the swirls in the back kind of reminds me of Jupiter. It's very interpretative and I can tell you spent much time on it.

Best of luck with your classes, girl!

Love the name! And this is a beautiful piece!! I love that you used colored pencils on top of the print, what a unique and cool idea! It turned out super pretty (of course) I took a basic printmaking class in high school, of course I never did anything this cool, but it was a lot of fun to try!

This is very beautiful! It reminds me of a raging volcano in the sunset or something clever like that ;)
And who doesn't love a good alliteration. I'm a teacher I try to come up with alliterative titles for pretty much anything I do to make it sound more fun for the kiddos! haha.
